The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish
The Ark Childrens Theatre, Temple Bar, Dublin
Projection Design/Animation
The Ark Childrens Theatre in Dublin contacted us looking to work with us on a theatrical adaptation of Neil Gaimans book. We were delighted to be ask to adapt such beautiful illustration for the stage. In discussion with director Eric Fraad, we decided upon animated backdrops whereby Dave McKeans adapted graphics would be projected onto a whitewashed stage. This allowed the actors to be transported to different parts of their world without need for moving the physical stage around. We used a cut out style of animation preserving as much of the compositions of Dave McKeans work.

A bit of technical juggling was required for this which came off the back of doing timed visuals for the Caribou Marino tour as well as live visuals for other events at the time. We used two projectors to cover the large span of the stage along with two DVD players with visual cues timed to cues in the script. We also had to playout audio from this for some sections as the show featured redesigned music by Max Tundra whom we had previously made a video for.
Technically we pushed the equipment and ourselve to the limit but it was a great experience providing animated work for a live show (we even got to 'tech' a couple of the first run of shows to train someone in to use the setup) The production was well received and was nominated for an Irish Theatre Award that year. |
