Make the Video
a one week music video making workshop at The Ark/Fatima Mansions for Fatima children. (2005) |
As part of Delicious 9, I was asked to host a 'Make the video' workshop at the Ark, Dublin for children of Fatima Mansions. Musicians from D1 records were also present to help the children build a music track to go to the video. The project started openly, camera equipment was there for children to play with to build excitement about the project. There was a conversational approach to developing their stories and what they wanted to see/hear in the videos. Also discussed the idea of planning how it would be made it with lots of room for improvisation and bringing as many of their ideas together into one video. Every session emphasised the fun of being creative. The workshop was well structured but had flexibility for innovation and responding to new ideas. Discussions would take place as a group, ensuring each child was accomodated with whatever level of engagement they wanted to have with the video workshop. All the adults present, community helpers were also brought in to help out in whatever way they could. The video was shot on location in Fatima mansions and dealt with lots of ideas/topics that were part of their lives growing up in Fatima Mansions and expressing themselves and their voice. A screening for the Fatima community was put on in the community centre so the children could show to family and friends all the work they had created. |
